when i was a senior in high school, i had an english teacher who subscribed to the excellent belief that the best way to learn to write is by writing. to reinforce this, she had us write in a notebook every day at the beginning of class. sometimes she had us write for 20 minutes. sometimes it was only 10. there were days that she put a writing prompt on the board. other days she would just put ‘free write’ on the board and we could write whatever we wanted.
to encourage us to actually write, she promised not to read what we wrote. she just flipped the pages to see that we were, in fact, writing. that was it. no grading of this writing. i still, to this day, credit that year of journaling for preparing for four years of college essays!
i haven’t kept a hand-written journal in a very long time. i never liked my handwriting and i never liked the effort it took to write. now that i have my lovely pink laptop, i blog. it’s a wonderful compromise. i get to put my thoughts down for others to read, but i don’t have to worry about how messy my writing is.
i have discovered a few other blogs that i really enjoy. some are written by friends. others are written by people i have never met, and will likely never meet. they have so many readers, in fact, that they probably don’t even realize i am absorbing their writing so carefully each time they post.
i find that this blog-reading satisfies a part of me that i used to be embarrassed about… i am nosey. in pittsburgh, we call that being nebby. i am very, very nebby. i love to know other people’s business. i love to hear the latest news about celebrities. listening to complete strangers talking as they sit behind me on a bus is better than watching tv! it is all just glorious fun to me.
i am not a gossip (please correct me if i am wrong) because i don’t proceed to pass all this new found information along to any one. no, i tend to be quite selfish in my nebbi-ness. (i’m also horribly forgetful)
oh! i also love to look at houses for sale on line. my favorite ones are where they have interior pictures. in looking at those photos, i get to be nebby about how people keep their houses. now, i realize that people keep their houses quite differently when they are not trying to sell them, but still! i get to see wall colors, furniture styles and even if they like flowers or candles. i’m telling you… i am nebby!
by the way, facebook is very attractive to such a nebnose as myself. so if you are my facebook friend, i warn you… at some point i probably have (or will) looked through all your pictures and such. i’m not looking for anything, really… just being me… just being nebby! 🙂
am i alone? or are there other neb-noses out there??? come on, be honest! i mean, you read all my silly stories. what’s that about??? lol

I love reading your blogs!
I too follow a lot of different blogs beside yours, they are so very interesting to me. People say I spend to much time on the internet, mainly family, but I would rather do this then watch t.v.–this way I can watch tv and still be on the internet. There are so many interesting things to read and look into.
I don’t know if anyone reads my blogs or not and truly don’t care because I mainly write for myself. Though I did have a family newsletter and this sort of in a way is like that exce[t I don’t write about what my relatives are doing-I just write about what interest me – selfish of me (lol)
You made me feel so much better when you wrote that you don’t have to worry about how messy my writing is – I always wonder if anyone is reading my blog if my writing is being edited and how many mistakes I have made. English is not my forte’-though I love to write.
I love just love your engagement pictures – am so very happy for you and your family
I am the same way! You friended me on fb although we didn’t know each other well. I believe that I have gotten to know you (and your heart) pretty well through your writings. Yes. I read your blog. I think you are a fascinating mother, friend and teacher. You’ve taught me so much about autism and I appreciate the knowledge. It helps me to be more empathetic. So, thank goodness for that English teacher! May we all have someone who inspires us to do something that touches at least one other life in a positive way. Best of luck to you Kathy!
P.S. No one in Michigan knew what nebby was either! The English Oxford dictionary says a “neb” is a bird with a big nose! And my favorite word is “nebshit” which describes me perfectly!
Aw, thank you Lori!!! I really like how facebook let’s us get to know each other in ways that never would have been possible without it! I am glad that you are able to learn from me. I have enjoyed getting to know you too! (and thank you thank you thank you again for the tap shoes!!!)
I’m totally the same way! lol I love looking through people’s pictures and reading blogs!
Isn’t it fun??? 😀
