Are you a Joy Killer or a Joy Seeker?

I have crazy hair. I don’t know if you knew that. In case you were unaware, here is a picture of me and my friend, Jennifer, from Friday:

I find hair to be a great place to have fun, and I am fortunate in that my workplace does not care. It’s that simple. If I was going to get fired for having crazy hair, I wouldn’t have it.

That being said, I need you to ask yourself, “What is my gut reaction to Kathy’s hair color?” Now hold that thought and let me tell you about my morning…

I went to church today. When I got there but before I even got in to the building, I ran into a gentleman who goes to my church. He gave me a generous smile and said, “I know what the color of the day must be! Did you stay up all night making that happen?” It was warm and kind and I knew from his tone and smile that he truly saw the joy in my hair.

I walked up the driveway and into the church hall. The very first person I saw was an older woman. She looked at me and said, “What did you do???” There was complete exasperation and disdain in her voice. I smiled and said I went for color and kept walking.

These two people are roughly the same age… in their 80s. They had completely different reactions!

They are both parents and grandparents. They are both Christian. They have both known me long enough to NOT be surprised by my crazy hair.

After that second interaction, I walked into the church itself. I found a seat and sat down. From behind me I heard, “I would know that blue head anywhere!” Another friendly and kind reaction to my hair! He got it. We both laughed. This person is much younger than the previous two… only about 30.  Over the course of the next 90 minutes, I got more comments…

“I love your hair! It looks like spring!”

“Why?” (this one was accompanied with an asymmetrical grimace…absolute contempt)

“Great hair color!”

“So pretty!” (I heard this one over and over)

So… all of this has me thinking.

What is your reaction to my hair?

Honestly, I don’t care if you like it. You certainly don’t have to. And no one is going to make you dye your own hair! But can you see the joy? Or do you want to squash it because it does not fit into your worldview of hair?

Just asking….

OH, and before it was this color, it was this:

Anyone can have brown hair.  Purple hair is something kinda amazing. Just sayin’
