This morning (as every morning) on my drive to work, I listened to KLOVE. If you don’t know what that is, it’s a Christian radio station. If you want to know where it is on the radio in your area, just go to their website. If they don’t have a station in your area, you can listen online for free!
Their catchphrase is, “Positive, Encouraging, KLOVE.” I agree that it is very positive and encouraging. The music is such a beautiful reminder to me that God is in control and He is with me always. It is remarkable how many times I have heard just the right song, with the right message.
This morning, one of the morning show hosts (I couldn’t tell which guy, as their are two and they sound a lot alike) said this: “It’s amazing how happy you get when you realize your purpose on this earth has nothing to do with happiness.”
Think about that.
I have felt this for a long time… that happiness is not the point. But I never realized just how wonderful it is. I think there is a lot of pressure, especially in the US, to “be happy.” Isn’t that what ‘keeping up with the joneses’ is about? Aren’t there always commercials about how we should try harder to be happy like those with a new house, new car, or even new shampoo? Happiness is thrust upon us every moment of every day as the be-all and end-all of human existence.
What a crock of s#!%.
It’s not about being happy. We all have a purpose on this earth, but it is not a selfish purpose. Some are here to heal. Some are to serve. Some are to offer hospitality.
My purpose, as best as I can tell, is to make others’ lives easier. I am here to lighten your load. I have gotten that message from God quite clearly over the years. Yup, I am a helper. And ya know what? THAT is what brings me the greatest joy and allows me to feel happy.
So think about that today. What is your purpose on this earth? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.
