one of my favorite movies (ok, i have many, many favorite movies) is ‘office space.’ if you have not seen it, you need to. i own it. come borrow it, ok? it is like watching a live-action dilbert.
the main character in the movie, peter, is very unhappy in his job. he works for a company called inetech as some sort of programmer or computer geek. he has 8 bosses and they are all quick to point out his mistakes. at one point, he is discussing his unhappiness with some coworkers and says, “Our high school guidance counselor used to ask us what you’d do if you had a million dollars and you didn’t have to work. And invariably what you’d say was supposed to be your career. So, if you wanted to fix old cars then you’re supposed to be an auto mechanic.” peter never had an answer for what he would do, because he would prefer to do nothing. me? i bet you can guess this…. if i could do whatever i wanted, and didn’t have to work, i’d knit.
i find myself looking through the pages of etsy at all the different ‘shops’ and wondering how people make a living doing just crafts. if i could, i would. i cannot imagine the quantity of knitting i would have to do, though. selling my purses and mittens has always been my way of paying for christmas. but to make enough to actually support the girls and i? i really just don’t know…
so that is my passion. yes, i have others. my girls. my faith. my family. but knitting… it is what keeps me sane. it is also one of my best talents. somehow, these hands are really good at turning yarn into things. i also have the ability to look at yarn in a skein or hank and imagine what i would turn it into. sometimes i use a pattern. sometimes i just go with it. it is like i can see the item inside that yarn, just waiting to come out. it is pure thrill for me to watch it emerge from my needles.
in october, november and december of last year, i spent all of my ‘free’ time making purses, mittens and socks. i can make all three of those items without a pattern! right now, i am exploring everything and anything else! i made a baby dress for the newest grandchild. i am working on some other baby projects for her and her cousin-to-be. i also am itching to try some bigger, more complex projects.
so back to the movie…. peter never really does find his passion, but he at least ends up at a job that he does not hate. i suppose for some of us, that is the most we can expect from a ‘job.’ i don’t hate my job. most days i love my job. but if i could do what i really, really wanted…. it would be more of me knitting. 😀
